We are spending a lot of time focusing on our Service
Excellence Standards – in the Daily Huddles and how we live them each and every
day. So when I came across this
article that lists the things you should never do in an office environment
I got to thinking about what would be considered a “sin” here at Children’s
Specialized Hospital.
Here is my list of “Office Sins”:
- Never yell. I have never found a reason that someone needs to yell – unless of course they are trying to prevent someone from running into traffic! If the only way you can get your point across is to yell, then you probably shouldn’t say anything. Take a breath and come back when the yell is no longer in your throat.
- Dress appropriately. If the outfit you have on is something you second guess to wear to work because it may not be appropriate, don’t wear it. The little birdy in your head telling you that it’s not that bad, probably is fibbing.
- Cut the negativity. Avoid talking about others in a negative way. It just isn’t nice and never productive.
- Resolve it. If your feelings are hurt by something that has happened at work, find a way to ask the person why they did what they did – not in a critical way. Seek to understand rather than accuse.
- Think before you speak. Never let words come out of your mouth that you know you will regret later – we have all done it. Sometimes it may be hard to swallow, but rewording what you want to say will pay off in the long run.

Here are my top three...
-Never reply or send an email when you are angry. Wait till after lunch or sleep on it!
-Get to know your coworkers! We spend too much time at work not to engage the people around us. You never know when a new friendship may blossom.
-Speak less, listen more. This is a hard one for me! Excercising your listening skills is beneficial to both you and your coworkers.
-Treat everyone as you wish to be treated. The CEO and the house keeper deserve the same level of respect
-Be kind. You never know the personal struugle someone may be going through.
-Never assume! Things arent always what they seem.
Always remember that everyone is struggling with something. It doesn't matter who they are. If you have a choice between being kind and being right. Choose to be kind.
Smile- Try to keep a smile on your face, no matter how bad your feeling. Someone else may be feeling worse and a smile just may make there day!
P.S. Even when your speaking to someone over the phone.
*Do not Judge!
We really don’t know the reasons for someone’s behavior or what they might be going through. When someone does something you don’t like, perhaps think of it as they are simply solving a problem in a different way than you would. Or maybe they have a different timetable than you do.
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid! ~Albert Einstein
Be kind treat others the way you would want your mom treated. Don't judge a book by its cover there could be a great story under there. Be happy life is way to short to be angry and unhappy, your life can change in an instant, trust me if anyone knows I DO!
